Embracing Minimalism: My Journey of Letting Go and Selling Possessions

By Casey Kaplan - May 19, 2023

Embracing Minimalism:

In a world where material possessions often define our worth and success, I have embarked on a transformative journey toward embracing minimalism. The desire to declutter my life and simplify my surroundings has led me to explore the path of minimalism. In this post, I’ll share my personal experiences, challenges, and the profound impact this journey has had on my life.

The Awakening:

Embracing minimalism all began with the realization that my life felt cluttered and heavy, both physically and mentally. I yearned for a sense of calm, focus, and freedom. Minimalism’s philosophy of intentionally reducing unnecessary possessions seemed the answer to my longing.

Assessing My Belongings:

To kick-start my embracing minimalism journey, I took inventory of all my belongings. It was a daunting task, but it allowed me to reflect on the value each possession brought to my life. I evaluated items based on their functionality, emotional attachment, and contribution to my overall well-being.

I pulled everything out of my closet to accurately assess and evaluate all the excess that I had accumulated. The excess in this photo still makes me sad – and this was only part of it.

Letting Go and Embracing Minimalism:

One of the most challenging aspects of embracing minimalism was parting ways with my possessions. I had to confront the attachments I had developed over the years. However, I realized that true happiness did not lie in material possessions but in the experiences and relationships that enriched my life. Letting go became a liberating act, allowing me to detach from the unnecessary burdens of ownership and maintenance.

The Art of Selling:

I sold many possessions to downsize and simplify my life. From furniture and equipment to clothing and collectibles, I carefully curated a list of items that no longer served a purpose in my life. Selling these belongings helped declutter my physical space, provided a financial boost, and allowed others to find value in what I no longer needed. It also kept my discarded items out of a landfill; at least for now.

Strategic Selling:

With a clear intention to downsize and simplify, I embarked on the task of selling my possessions strategically. By researching online platforms, local classifieds, and garage sale opportunities I became better equipped to maximize my profits. I listed my items for sale on multiple platforms including Craigslist, Nextdoor, and Facebook Marketplace. Craigslist and Nextdoor proved better platforms for higher-valued items (cars, equipment, and furniture valued over $500), while I found Facebook Marketplace and various local Facebook “online/yardsale” groups better suited for lower-end items ($500 or less). By tapping into various selling avenues, I ensured a broader reach and increased chances of securing fair prices for my items.

When we moved to NM from CA, I sold one of my favorite pieces ever! This cast concrete heated bench was made by an artist in San Francisco (link: Galanter & Jones). After loving this bench for many years, I sold it for almost what I paid for it. Letting it go was difficult; especially because we had to help load it into this truck, but it was time. We had a simple life awaiting us and there wasn’t room for this bench in that life.

Too many great memories (with dear friends) to count took place on this bench!

Valuable Sales:

Some of my possessions proved to be particularly lucrative. For instance, the sale of my car, which no longer aligned with my minimalist lifestyle, resulted in significant financial gains. We were a family of four drivers, and we owned three cars. With our daughters off at college and living at home only part-time, we decided we could manage by sharing just the two cars. We sold our third car for $9,000 and saved additional money by no longer paying insurance, maintenance, and registration costs.

There was a time when Alan enjoyed riding this unicycle, but years had passed since then. It was now time to let someone else have some fun with it. We sold it for $125.

Additionally, items like extra bikes, a unicycle, and outdated workout equipment that we didn’t use much, fetched respectable amounts due to their excellent condition and market demand during Covid when gyms were shut down and recreational items were hard to find in stores. Covid also proved an excellent time to sell our extra desks and desk chairs since remote work from home was becoming more essential. I also waited to list my outdoor furniture for sale until springtime when I knew more people would want it. Waiting for peak season to sell it proved worthwhile as I was able to earn top dollar for it.

My mom gave me this bench a few years before she passed and I always loved it. Unfortunately my new house did not have a great space for it. It was hard for me to let it go. However, I knew my mom would not want my sentimental attachments to weigh me down. She would want me to hand it off to someone else to love. I sold it for $125 to a woman who still sends me photos of it in her garden. It helps me knowing how much she loves it.

Although some items were harder to part with than others, it was the right time for us to let go. All in all, we pocketed more than $30,000 for our underused possessions that no longer served us well!

Reinventing Spaces:

The act of selling possessions not only generated income but also transformed my living spaces. By parting with a couch, an extra desk, and a console table, I began to create a minimalist environment. This empty space provided room for stretching sessions on the floor, as well as mental and visual freedom and clarity. My new and uncluttered environment fostered a sense of calm and helped me appreciate the value of simplicity.

Reinvesting in Experiences:

The profits I gained from selling my possessions didn’t solely serve as a financial boost; they also allowed me to invest in meaningful experiences. By prioritizing experiences over material possessions, I could engage in activities aligned with my values and passions. Whether it was planning additional travel, hiking in nature, taking a cooking class, or attending a live concert with friends, I relished the newfound freedom to embrace memorable moments.

Happiness is collecting moments… not things.

Embracing Minimalism and Minimalist Living:

As I bid farewell to items that once defined me, I started to experience the true essence of minimalism. I discovered the joy of living with less, appreciating the beauty in simplicity, and focusing on what truly matters. My home transformed into a serene sanctuary, where I could see how someday only the essentials might remain. It began to foster a sense of peace and tranquility rather than serving as a reminder of everything I needed to tackle, clean, look after, or care for.

The Ripple Effect:

My journey towards minimalism didn’t end with selling possessions; it sparked a positive ripple effect in various aspects of my life. I made more conscious choices about what I consumed, prioritized experiences over material goods, and reevaluated my values and goals, especially concerning the planet. It allowed me to feel more happiness for the possessions that remained, and less burdened by the rest. Minimalism became a catalyst for personal growth, enhancing my creativity, mindfulness, and overall well-being. It lessened my anxiety and stress and freed my mind to focus on more important things. I learned that cutting the clutter also meant decreasing the noise in my head.

Challenges and Lessons Learned While Embracing Minimalism:

Embracing minimalism isn’t without its challenges. It requires discipline, self-reflection, and a willingness to let go. I continue to struggle with sentimental items regarding my mom and grown children. I also have a weakness for beautiful pieces; mostly clothes but also art/decor that I pick up during my travels. These are things that I “want” because they give me joy, but that I don’t necessarily need. However, through each obstacle, I learn valuable lessons about the impermanence of possessions, the true meaning of happiness, and the importance of living intentionally. I definitely still have room for growth however!

Parting Thoughts on Embracing Minimalism:

My journey towards minimalism and selling my possessions has been a profound and transformative experience. Embracing minimalism has allowed me to reevaluate my relationship with material goods, redefine my priorities, and cultivate a sense of purpose and contentment. Embracing minimalism has freed me from the burden of excess and granted me the gift of simplicity.

The process of letting go not only generated income but also reinforced the idea that true value lies in experiences and personal growth, rather than material possessions. I encourage everyone to explore this path and discover the transformative power of letting go and living with less. May my journey inspire you to consider the potential financial benefits that can accompany your own minimalist path, allowing you to pave the way for a more intentional and prosperous future. I may not yet be a true minimalist, but I hope to arrive there one day. Anyone want to wander down this path with me?

Another one of my “favorite” pieces that I had sentimental attachments to. My mom had loved this piece and it always made me think of her. However there was not a great space for it in my NM simple life home, and because I had parted ways with so many dishes, I no longer needed a storage piece. I sold it for nearly what I paid for it and I kept a photo of it.
