Nestled in the Lincoln National Forest in southern New Mexico, the Aguirre Springs Campground is beautifully positioned on the east side of the Organ mountains and near White Sands National Park. It’s a must-visit campground for camping near White Sands National Park and hiking destination with beautiful seasonal springs for those seeking adventure and beauty in the great outdoors. This BLM campground also offers breathtaking views of the surrounding desert and mountain ranges, as well as easy access to nearby White Sands National Park and White Sands Missile Range Museum. This is my favorite campground when I’m lucky enough to visit White Sands National Park.
Amazing hiking just steps from the campground!
At Aguirre Springs, you’ll find epic hiking trail access within walking distance to the campground. I love that the campground offers access to these two beautiful and well-marked trailheads – Baylor Canyon and Pine Tree Trail. These trails offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape and the nearby Tularosa Basin and White Sands National Park.
Aguirre Springs Campground info:
When it comes to camping, Aguirre Springs offers one of my favorite settings and backdrops in New Mexico. The campground hosts 55 sites plus 2 additional group camping sites. The 55 sites are first come first served but the group sites can be reserved by calling (575) 525-4300. The campground has both RV (no hookups) and tent camping sites available. Each site has its own picnic table, shade shelter, fire rings and access to pit toilets. The campground is also pet-friendly, so you can bring your furry friends along for the adventure.
If you plan to bring your RV, note that the road to the campground is narrow and winding. The road is not recommended for RVs over 23 feet.
Water is only available at the campground entrance near the gates. The gates to the campground are open from 8 AM – 6 PM in the winter (November- March) and 7 AM – 8 PM in the summer (March – November) so plan accordingly.
Visiting nearby White Sands National Park:
For those looking to explore the nearby White Sands National Park, Aguirre Springs is a convenient camping location. This National Park is famous for its breathtaking landscapes, including its towering sand dunes made up of gypsum crystals. Visitors to White Sands can take a scenic drive, hike, picnic, learn the science and history of the park at the visitors center or even sled down the beautiful dunes. Check out my blogpost on White Sands National Park for more info on exploring and hiking at White Sands National Park. https://wakewanderrepeat.com/an-explorers-and-hikers-guide-to-white-sands-national-park-in-new-mexico/
